Title: Integrated augmented reality research for socially disabled people (blind and partially sighted)

The main project goal is R&D of the integrated technological and organizational innovations for the blind and partially sighted people to increase their mobility, working capacity, and social integration. The main project task is to implement the main project goal in the framework of smart specialization, using advanced augmented reality and computational intelligence methods, mechatronics and electronics, social networking, and communication innovations, designed for the worldwide blind and partially sighted people community. The main task is subdivided into concrete activities that address the specific research tasks in a detailed project implementation plan. Augmented reality commercial solutions have just started to emerge for the normally sighted people now. However, the initial worldwide analysis has showed that conceptually close augmented reality commercial applications for a specific (blind and partially sighted people) market segment are not available as yet. Sooner or later it will happen in this specific market segment too, although it demands different in kind approaches and innovations. Hence, we estimate that there is a few years unfulfilled market niche in this specific market segment until augmented reality R&D solutions will fill the gap. This smart specialization project could timely address the unique R&D opportunity. Based on these observations, we believe this project may lead to the world class commercially viable implementations. Therefore, the ambitious project foresees a patent claim (and hopefully issued patent after a few years of patenting procedures within or beyond the framework of this project) in the US, i.e. the biggest and most receptive market of innovations in the world. In case the US patent will commercially succeed, we also foresee the EU patent and worldwide patent as well. Admittedly, effective and integrated augmented reality solutions are vitally important for the blind and partially sighted people. The improvement of their on-site orientation and mobility increases social integration, self-support, and working capacity. Hence, the results of this research project are important to the rest of society as well. It directly deals with social and economic worldwide problems of socially disabled people. We do intend to make a social feasibility study in order (directly or indirectly) to estimate social and economic effects of intended integral (technological and organizational) innovations as well.

Currently complicated state of national social capital and social cohesion in general requires analytical research efforts to explore the driving processes. This research project aims to analyse and model impact of cultural events that considerably contribute to the formation of individual and societal states affecting social capital and social cohesion as well. In this way, the project pursues creation of a modelling tool that would allow not only to promote understanding and simulation of the underlying processes but also could be applied as a decision support and recommendation system for the cultural policy formation. For that matter this multidisciplinary project seeks to develope (i) unique quantitative measuring metrics, (ii) conceptual model and, (iii) agent-based simulation model. Proposed approach would shed a new light on dynamics of social capital and social cohesion that is taking polace on the verge of global convergence and local polarization. Admittedly, cultural participation and usage of its products and servises has a profound effect on the development of personality. However, there is still a lack of thorough multidisciplinary research efforts not only in Lithuania but also in the EU, that would analyze direct and indirect relations between cultural events and social capital and social cohesion as well. This is a very wide area of research, which untill recently has been dominated by the qualitative research. Thus, this project proposes a leading edge quantitative research to model dynamics of social capital and social cohesion in the context of cultural industries, creativity and culture in general. Project's outlines well correspond with the guidelines of National cultural policy formation, National advancement program 2014-2020 and National advancement strategy 2030. However, research metrics, methods and models developed during the project will have a universal nature that can be applicable for other regions and countries as well.

The main goal of the research - working out the oscillations based multi-agent simulation paradigm (OSIMAS). To implement this goal the following tasks (they are laid out according to the sequence of work) are set  below:

      I.                   Fundamental interdisciplinary research

1.1   Development of virtual computational field (VCF): model and methods;

1.2   Development of oscillating agent (OAM) model and methods;

1.3   Development of wavelike interaction mechanism (WIM): model and methods.

II.                Virtual lab, intelligent agents, unique multi-agent simulation platform development

2.1   Designing and implementation of virtual lab: web access, algorithmic and data interface;

2.2   Designing intelligent agents according to OAM model and methods: computational intelligence approach;

2.3   Analyses, specification and designing of unique MAS platform according to VCF model;

2.4   Designing agents wave-like interaction mechanism (WIM).

III.             Practical application

3.1   Specification of the application case, data collection, business logic modeling;

3.2   Adaptation of unique MAS platform for the application case;

3.3   Applied simulation software solution: calibration, testing and beta version preparation.

IV.            Presentation of scientific results

4.1   Scientific publications;

4.2   International scientific conferences;

4.3   Preparation of monograph (in English);

4.4   Publication of project related ISSN issue;

4.5   Booked articles in the local media.


Expected results                                                                                                                                                 

The project would contribute both to Lithuanian and the world's scientific community, because of:             

1)      fundamentally new conceptual research results (VCF, OAM, WIM mofels),

2)      unique oscillations based simulation paradigm (OBSP),

3)      virtual modeling platform (virtual lab and MAS platform) adjusted for the applied research,

4)      unique MAS platform adjusted for the practical application case,

5)      published research results in the high level journals (4 ISI level articles and 2 articles in other pair reviewed journals),    

6)      presentations and proceedings (4 ISI proceedings and 2  other pair reviewed proceedings),                       

7)      the monograph in English accepted by the known scholarly publisher,

8)      international team of scholars and effective integration to the R&D network community.


The uniqueness of the planned scientific research

The feasibility analysis (carried out earlier, see EU funded IdejaLt project, reg. no. S-VP2-1.3-UM-01-K-01-065) shows, that the proposed idea of the interdisciplinary research is unique and innovative. One can certainly affirm that the main scientific ideas presented in this research have not been realized yet in the world's social research field. The closest examples of economic theories would be: complexity economics, which rejects the assumptions of economics as a closed system; behavioral economics (integrating assumptions of psychology and neoclassical economics theory); evolutionary economics (inspired by evolutionary biology). However, the agents in these theories have an atomic structure and mechanistic behavior type. None of these theories employ unique oscillations based simulation paradigm (OBSP) approach.
